Student Life

In the heart of the UK, Leicester is a student-friendly and affordable city. It also has a great sporting reputation with world-class festivals, excellent shops, cafes, pubs, clubs and theatres. Beyond the city there is beautiful countryside.

The city's nightlife offers bars and clubs for all tastes. Famous artists and local up-and-coming bands perform at live music venues. Every February, the UK's longest-running comedy festival takes over the region, with hundreds of shows and events across Leicester. The largest Diwali celebrations outside of India and the UK's second largest Caribbean carnival, it encompasses celebrations from many cultures.

More than 250 societies dealing with the arts, sport, traditions, national cultures, politics, activism, hobbies and student media are offered by the Leicester Students' Union. £21 million was spent on the restoration and refurbishment of the building and student union services.

The Students' Union is home to the only live music venue on the O2 Academy campus, featuring performances from existing and new bands, as well as club events and student nights.

Living Accommodation

The University of Leicester guarantees accommodation for all students who apply for a room before 1 September each year. Students will love staying in either The Village or The City. The Village has striking halls with impressive features such as wood paneling and hidden gardens, as well as converted Edwardian mansions. The area is surrounded by green areas, including the university botanical garden, in a leafy suburb 5 km from the campus.

The City consists of purpose-built self-catering apartment blocks located 10 minutes walk from campus, city center and train station. Both locations have 24-hour help, student housing advisors, and a jam-packed social calendar open to all students.

Rooms, studio apartments, and multi-bed rooms are available for catering and self-sufficiency. Many sophomores and third-year students still chose to live in dormitories, but most live in and around the city. The dormitory office supports students who want to live in a private rented apartment outside of the dormitory.

Transport

On the compact campus of the University of Leicester, all teaching buildings are within walking distance of one another. The campus is a few minutes' walk from Leicester train station, while supermarkets, a cinema complex, local shops, bars and restaurants are all nearby.

The campus and Village accommodations are connected by a shuttle bus service and bike paths. The Studentenwerk operates a security bus until 2 a.m. London St Pancras is only 65 minutes away. There is easy access to East Midlands and Birmingham airports as well as direct rail and bus services to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.
