History
Sir Albert Sloman established the groundwork for what would become a one-of-a-kind research university in 1963. The University of Essex in the United Kingdom was founded in 1964 as 'Essex Spirit,' with Sir Albert Sloman serving as its first Vice-Chancellor. Essex Spirit received its inaugural class of 122 students in October 1964, who were drawn to the university's unique purpose.
By October 1964, the student batch had grown to 750 students, and Lord Butler had been appointed as Chancellor. Between 1970 and 1980, the university expanded its present facilities by adding a new health centre, day nursery, bookstore, and art gallery.
In 2015, Essex Business School was established as the UK’s first zero-carbon educational institutional building. In 2019, the University of Essex allied with seven other prestigious UK universities called the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance.

Student Life
Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, and Loughton are the three campuses of the University of Essex in the United Kingdom. Essex's student life can be described as culturally diverse and vibrant.

All new students at the University of Essex's Colchester and Southend campuses are given housing for their first year. Transport
For University of Essex students, getting around the campus and town is a breeze. Accommodations in both Colchester and Southend are near to the main campus. Students can either walk or ride their bikes to and from campus. On campus, there is also a secure bike parking facility.
The bus and railway are the most convenient ways to get from the Colchester Campus to the town centre and London. The Southend Campus is located close to the airport and is just a short train ride away from Central London.
The Loughton Campus is located near London and is only a short train ride away. The main campus is about a 5-minute walk from the Debden underground station.
