Overview

Despite being established as a university only in 2007, Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) already enrols over 8,000 students. Originally founded as the School of Science and Art in 1893, Buckinghamshire New University is renowned for both its long tradition of academic quality and its many cutting-edge programmes, including those in police science and commercial pilot training.

Undergraduate and graduate students attend classes at High Wycombe, while medical and nursing students attend classes at the smaller Uxbridge campus.

History

The university was established as a School of Science and Art in 1891, and it has improved people's lives ever since. They take great satisfaction in the fact that the world and the people who live in it are improved by their research, teaching, and labour.

Buckinghamshire New University history at a glance:

  • 1891- Founding of the School of Science and Art in High Wycombe in Frogmoor Gardens
  • 1920- Tuition was given to ex-soldiers and sailors of the First World War.
  • 1963- After the Second World War, increased demand for technical education led to the College of Further Education being opened on a new site in Queen Alexandra Road.
  • 1975- High Wycombe College of Art and Technology merged with Newland Park College of Education to form Buckinghamshire College of Further Education.
  • 1989- The college became one of the UK’s new independent Higher Education Corporations.
  • 1995- Missenden Abbey, a former Augustinian monastery founded in 1133, is acquired
  • 1999- They are awarded University College status by the government in recognition of their high standards of teaching, training, and research, and become Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College.
  • 2007- They are granted a university title and change their name to Buckinghamshire New University.
  • 2009- An additional site is established in Uxbridge, west London, to support nursing training in North London.
  • 2010- The Gateway Building wins a prestigious RIBA award
  • 2011- Buckinghamshire UTC is given the go-ahead by the Government. The UTC is jointly led by Aylesbury College and Buckinghamshire New University.
  • 2015- The Aylesbury Campus is opened to support education in the north of Buckinghamshire
  • 2016- The University celebrates its 125th anniversary
  • 2020- The University opens its facilities at Pinewood Studios

Buckinghamshire New University was ranked 12th by The Huffington Post and among the top 14 by The Daily Telegraph when it came to the UK's most innovative universities. Furthermore, BNU's music business and aviation programmes have received recognition for their superior quality.

Buckinghamshire New University's REF 2021 results demonstrate consistent progress. Fourteen percent of BNU research was judged to be of world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) level based on the six subject-based units of assessment (UOA) the institute submitted to REF 2021. This represents years of work by researchers throughout the institution.

Location

Situated around halfway between London and Oxford, High Wycombe is the second-largest town in the county and serves as the county seat of Buckinghamshire. This town is more than an industrial centre; markets have been held on the high street three times a week at least since the 12th century.

Students' varied interests and demands are met by the town's modern commercial district, sports complex, artificial ski centre, and vibrant nightlife. Travellers can select between Heathrow and Gatwick airports for their rail ride to London, which takes less than an hour. Nursing Bucks News students live in Uxbridge, a London Underground stop.
