Established in 1828 as the 'Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge,' UCLan has undergone several transformations over the years. Originally known as the 'Harris Institute' after a significant donation in 1882, it later became 'Harris College' in 1956 during a period of government-led technical education reorganization. Subsequent changes led to its evolution into 'Preston Polytechnic' in 1973 and 'Lancashire Polytechnic' in 1984. Finally, in 1992, it attained university status and adopted the name 'University of Central Lancashire.'
